8532-8801 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles

This series explores the darker side of Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, which, in the 1960s, became the epicentre of the counterculture movement, with clubs like Whisky a Go Go and Pandora’s Box hosting bands including The Doors, The Byrds and Frank Zappa. However, the Strip also became the backdrop to a series of protests in 1966 caused by clashes between the youth and the police, the Sunset Curfew Riots. These protests began peacefully but ended in violence and marked the beginning of the dispersion of the counterculture.
